Harvest aplenty!

Harvest time is just about over here. Beets came out of the ground this week, and we have only Brussel Sprouts, kale, and collards left in the ground. Those will stay there until the Thursday before Thanksgiving, as they don't store as well in our root cellar. Speaking of the root cellar, here is a shot of our fully stocked cellar. We borrowed an idea from Throwback at Trapper Creek to use hay bales as our root cellar insulation.

With the leafy greens looking good and everything else harvested, I've been able to tally up all the totals from the various crops. I wanted to revisit my original estimated price of $80 for the vegetable box. I went to Whole Foods in Seattle to get a sense of what they were currently charging for their food, and also checked out prices at the Ballard Farmers Market.

As you can see, we're priced about $10 over the Whole Foods price, and about $10 less than the farmers market price. Not too shabby for our first time doing this! Based on these figures, we're going to set our final vegetable basket price at $75: a big discount from the farmer's market, but a bit of a premium over the organic, but not local food coming from Whole Foods. We think this is fair, and we hope you do to!
