This is just a quick post to share with you a Masters thesis by Casey Rogers on pastured pork. Casey approached me last year (and over a hundred other farms) to be part of her study, and I was happy to oblige. The results are really interesting and the thesis is well written. Casey gave me permission to post this here.

Is there any way to read this document without having to look at it through the small window here? it's a little like reading a book through a straw.

Nevermind; got it. Seems like 20 producers out of an estimated production of 750,000 animals is a vanishingly small sample of the market. The quotes from "personal interviews" were interesting, but unlike the other cited sources, you couldn't go and read the interview.

one of the producers mentioned, sugar mountain, has more than 30 sows, but doesn't get mentioned in any of the production stats that I could see.

and it's interesting that this study matches my conclusion that pigs can't be raised on grass alone, and that there is a common misconception among consumers about this fact, leading to difficulties in marketing pastured pork.
