The Food Bank Donation Option

We finally got around to setting up a connection with a local food bank. I was in Snohomish on Thursday to set up a slaughter date (July 14th) for the pigs, and randomly drove by the Snohomish Community Food Bank. I stopped in and met with the executive director, Elizabeth Grant, who was very enthusiastic about the Thanksgiving Dinner Box donation idea. She said that they get a large uptick in demand around the holidays and were installing freezers to be able to store turkeys. Unfortunately, my original idea of having the donated box go to one family probably won't work--they have the food bank set up where people can come in and take what they need from a variety of options. I can understand that that is the most efficient use of their resources. Plus, it will likely result in less wasted food in case some families don't like kale or beets (growing up, we wouldn't know what to do with those strange vegetable in my family).

So here's how I'm thinking the donation option is going to work: I'll set the price of a donated basket at a firm $180. That will cover a typical hen turkey and the vegetable portion of the basket. Any surplus after accounting for the cost of the turkey and the vegetables I will put into a cash donation to the food bank. In the event of crop failure or turkey loss where I can't deliver the whole basket, I will make up for the loss by allocating more of the $180 into a cash donation. This should protect your donation so that you know it doesn't turn into a donation to TF, but rather a way to support TF and give those in need a healthy Thanksgiving dinner.

Please let me know what you think of this idea and if you think anything should be tweaked. After getting feedback, I'll update the website to include the donation option.
